Coming soon: opening a Reptile Business

Written by Charles Thompson, REPTA General Secretary and former owner of Snakes ’N’ Adders, the book draws on more than twenty years in the reptile trade. It is intended to help those considering a reptile business understand the work, responsibility and commitment involved.

Taken from the Introduction

The dream of being your own boss and building something truly your own continues to inspire entrepreneurs across all sectors and the reptile industry is no exception. For many, the idea of turning a passion for animals into a livelihood offers an appealing escape from the monotony of the traditional 9-to-5 routine. However, while owning and operating a reptile business can be deeply rewarding, it is also a complex venture requiring careful planning, regulatory compliance, and sound financial judgment.

This guide has been developed by experienced reptile retail professionals, bringing together decades of hands-on knowledge to help aspiring business owners navigate the many challenges that lie ahead. One of the most significant hurdles involves compliance with the Licensing of Activities Involving Animals (LAIA) regulations, legislation handed down by central government and enforced by local authorities. While these regulations are designed to uphold high standards of animal welfare, they often require a rigorous and time-consuming commitment to documentation, record keeping, and procedural diligence.

Before you delve into the regulatory framework and the specific responsibilities you will shoulder as a shop owner, this guide begins with the foundational steps of business planning and budgeting. From securing a suitable location to designing and fitting out your premises, every decision carries financial and operational implications. REPTA will not offer specific advice regarding the LAIA regulations, a prospective business owner is expected to develop a deep understanding of these requirements as written. However, much of the advice contained here is formulated with the regulations in mind.

To bring these considerations to life, we will introduce a theoretical case study that follows the journey of launching a reptile shop (from site selection and budgeting through to preparation for inspection readiness). Throughout this guide, you’ll encounter key planning questions designed to help you shape your own business vision. Your answers to these questions may significantly influence your costs, timelines, and overall project feasibility.
